WINTER'S WINGS

A fresh fall of snow overnight has brought an unusual stillness to the English countryside, broken only by the roar of Merlin engines as Robin Olds and pilots from the 479th FG manage to get airborne from a hastily cleared runway to check out their P-51 Mustangs.

OPS ON HOLD

Heavy snow has settled over the frozen countryside around RAF Fiskerton in Lincolnshire, and for once the Lancasters of 49 Sqn stand quietly idle at their dispersal points, March 1944.

FORTRESS AT REST

Temporarily grounded by deep overnight snow, a B-17 Flying Fortress from the 398th BG stands quietly near the constantly patrolled perimeter of RAF Nuthampstead during the winter of 1944.

STRAGGLER AT DAWN

A lone Lancaster, badly damaged by flak over Germany, has fallen further and further behind the main formation. The exhausted Lancaster pilot has called on help from his flight engineer and between them they have somehow coaxed the battered aircraft onward. With the snow-clad landscape of England once more beginning to appear beneath them, they have finally made it home.

WINTER COMBAT

A few months ago they had been fighting for their lives during the Battle of Britain but for now the snow-clad tranquillity of an English winter brings a brief, but welcome, relief for the Mk.1 Hurricane pilots of 87 Sqn.
