BATTLE OF BRITAIN & FIGHTER PILOT SIGNING EVENT – 15th APRIL

We are delighted to announce that we’ll be joined at the Wendover Gallery by some amazing WWII veterans!

15 April 2018

Our guests include:

Section Officer JOAN FANSHAWE - Joan joined the Woman’s Auxiliary Air Force in 1940, aged 19. She was posted to the Ops Room at RAF Uxbridge, the headquarters of 11 Group which was made up of squadrons of both Spitfires and Hurricanes. Here, as a Special Duty WAAF, she tracked both RAF and Luftwaffe planes during the Battle of Britain and often met Winston Churchill when he visited the Ops Room.

Warrant Officer EDMUND CREEGAN - after completing pilot training he joined 243 Sqn in 1942 flying Spitfires as part of 322 Wing. He flew across North Africa and southern Europe and in June 1944, whilst ground-strafing in Italy, he was shot down and taken PoW. Managing to escape, he was picked up by Russians and eventually made it back to the UK.

Flight Lieutenant KURT TAUSSIG - at the age of 15, he was sent by his parents from Czechoslovakia to England in 1939 to escape the Nazi persecution of the Jews. At 18 he joined the RAF and was posted to 225 Sqn flying Hurricanes and Spitfires on Tactical and Artillery Reconnaissance duties.

Warrant Officer GEOFF HULETT - volunteered for the RAF in late 1941 aged 18 and completed pilot training before joining 225 Group in India as a ferry pilot delivering aircraft in support of the Allied air attacks against the Japanese. He flew many types of aircraft including Spitfires, Hurricanes and P-47 Thunderbolts and was awarded the Burma Star.
