Commemorating VJ Day

The 75th anniversary of VJ Day - the end of WWII

15 August 2020

On this special anniversary we're proud to feature this unique piece by Robert Taylor...

 VICTORY FLYOVER

Special Double Remarque

Robert’s classic piece brings to life the historic moment of the formal surrender to conclude WWII aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay.  With General Douglas MacArthur, Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz and Admirals Halsey and Sherman presiding, the Instrument of Surrender was completed.

Scarcely had the ink dried when, right on cue, and as if staged by Hollywood, shafts of brilliant sunlight broke through the morning mist to floodlight the scene. Above the Allied fleet a deep and growing rumble filled the air and a second armada appeared: hundreds of American Corsairs, Hellcats, Avengers, Helldivers, Mustangs, Thunderbolts and Superfortresses swept across the waters of Tokyo Bay to herald in the peace. The Second World War was finally over.

This superb piece has been personally hand signed for posterity by four veterans involved:

  • Lieutenant JOHN BREMYER
  • Commander HAL LAMAR
  • Rear Admiral CHESTER NIMITZ Jnr
  • Colonel KENNETH A. WALSH MoH

If that wasn't already special enough, Robert has hand-drawn a unique remarque in the lower margin depicting Fleet Admiral WILLIAM 'BULL' HALSEY who goes down in history as one of the foremost US Naval Commanders of WWII having led numerous campaigns in the Pacific.
