DEFENCE OF THE REALM - Framed Collectors Piece
by Robert Taylor
This symbolic piece portrays Group Captain Peter Townsend, Commanding Officer of 85 Squadron, during the long, hot summer of 1940. Fresh from the heat of battle over London and the Thames, he wearily turns his Hurricane towards home to refuel, re-arm and rejoin the fight.
Of all air combat paintings this one has always resonated with those who love the immortal Hurricane. And one of the greatest pilots of the Hurricane was Peter Townsend, probably the finest and most respected fighter leader to serve with RAF Fighter Command during the Battle of Britain. Not only has he personally signed the print, but this unique copy has been additionally autographed by a further three veterans who flew during the battle and framed to full conservation standards to include museum-quality reproduction RAF Wings and an ORIGINAL 1940s George VI penny within the mount.
