#5 HERB SUERTH - Autograph Collection
by Richard Taylor
Herb Suerth landed in July of 1944 in Scotland just after D-day. He ended up in a replacement depot with about 1,000 other engineers, some of which were anything but eager to get into fighting. A lot of the guys there were older than Suerth and had been electricians before war but often would avoid combat by shooting off their toes. However, Sureth was the complete opposite-he was ready to go and when he and his buddy Chase saw that the airborne divisions were taking applications they immediately went to their company commander.
This pencil sketch print by Richard Taylor portrays the moments when Sherman Firefly tanks of the 2nd Irish Guards force their way across the Waal at Nijmegen. Thundering overhead are the C-47s of the 314th Troop Carrier Group carrying the 1st Independent (Polish) Parachute Brigade towards encircled Arnhem.
