'Johnny' Johnson was the last surviving original member of No. 617 Squadron RAF and of Operation Chastise, the "Dambusters" raid of 1943. He was selected to be part of McCarthy's crew in Lancaster AJ-T (T-Tommy) which were detailed to attack the Sorpe Dam.

This graphite pencil drawing depicts the moments when members from 617 Squadron ground crew prepare Lancaster AJ-T for Operation Chastise on the afternoon of Sunday 16 May 1943.
