YANKEE DOODLE GOES TO TOWN

Carrying General Ira C. Eaker, Commanding Officer of VIII Bomber Command, B-17E ‘Yankee Doodle’ runs up her engines prior to the ‘Mighty Eighth’s’ first official mission of the war, 17 August 1942.

On the afternoon of Tuesday 17 August 1942, after weeks of intensive training and setbacks caused by the vagaries of the English weather, the U.S. Eighth Air Force set out on their first ‘official’ mission of the war.

Amongst the B-17 Fortresses was ‘Yankee Doodle’ carrying the Commanding Officer of VIII Bomber Command, Brigadier General Ira Eaker who had chosen to take part personally in the mission. Despite some minor flak damage to a couple of machines, all aircraft returned safely and the date will forever mark the first raid by the ‘Mighty Eighth’.

THE WOLFPACK STRIKES

P-47s from the 63rd FS, 56th FG dive at speed to strike at the German fighters attacking the lead formations of B-17s returning from Schweinfurt, 17 August 1943.

Exactly a year after the 8th AF had carried out its first ‘official’ mission of the war, on 17 August 1943 a huge force of 230 B-17s embarked on an ambitious raid deep into the heart of Bavaria with the ball-bearing factories at Schweinfurt the target.

Richard’s detailed piece shows the returning force coming under attack from Luftwaffe interceptors. However, P-47s of the 56th FG, the 'Wolfpack', dive in to protect the returning bombers and quickly destroy 17 Luftwaffe fighters, much to the relief of the bomber crews.

Adding great authenticity, the drawing has been signed by two pilots who flew with the Wolfpack and framed to full conservation standards to include reproduction USAAF wings and the original signature of the top-scoring American Ace in Europe who flew with the unit:

  • Cpt FRANK McCAULEY - 5 ½ victories
  • Lt WILLIAM HARTSHORN
  • Col FRANCIS 'GABBY' GABRESKI - 28 victories
