MOSQUITO AIRCREW SIGNING EVENT - 18th November

Continuing our busy weekend, we'll be joined at the Wendover Gallery by a number of aircrew who flew the de Havilland Mosquito during WWII.

Our special guests include:

Flight Lieutenant DES CURTIS DFC – serving as a Navigator he joined 235 Sqn on Beaufighters over the North Sea and Norwegian coast. In April 1943 he converted to Mosquitos and helped form 618 Sqn for special operations against the German Battleship Tirpitz. He then flew from bases in Cornwall attacking U-Boats in their pens along the French Atlantic Coast and in September 1944 joined 248 Sqn as part of the Banff Strike Wing flying Mosquitos out of Scotland.

Flight Lieutenant JOHN TROTMAN DFC* - he was still completing Pilot training when his crew participated in raids on Cologne and Essen, after which he joined 150 Sqn flying Wellingtons where he completed a full tour of 30 Operations. After a spell instructing he volunteered for a second tour and joined the Pathfinder Force, serving with 692 Sqn equipped with Mosquitos. He completed a total of 70 missions mostly against targets in Germany which included 19 trips to Berlin.

Flight Lieutenant GEORGE PRICHARD - having joined the RAF in 1943 on a direct entry commission, he was posted from Tech Signals Radar (Air) Branch to 151 Night Fighter Sqn on Mosquitos. He supported action on D-Day and across Europe throughout the Normandy Campaign, also maintaining and diagnosing crucial radar equipment. He later moved to ‘Tiger Force’ (Long Range Bomber Force) to fly against the Japanese from bases in Okinawa.

 

And Special Guest signer:

Flight Lieutenant WALTER FORSTER - based in Germany after the war in 1946 he flew Spitfires and then Mosquitos with 98 Sqn. Moving back to the UK he flew Meteors with 65 Sqn from Duxford before moving again to Germany with 234 Sqn flying Hunters. Posted to RAF Leuchars in Scotland with 43 Sqn he again flew Hunters before moving back to Germany on an exchange with the new German Airforce instructing young pilots on the Fouga Magiser jet trainer.
