As dawn broke on D-Day to reveal the bullet-swept beaches below, the skies were filled with P-51 Mustangs escorting C-47s and Waco gliders full of U.S. Airborne reinforcements as they head inland towards their drop zones.

SKYTRAIN TO NORMANDY

Towing Horsa and CG-4 Waco gliders, C-47 Skytrains of the 88th TCS / 438th TCG arrive over the Normandy beachhead on the evening of D-Day, 6 June 1944 during Operation Elmira to re-supply and reinforce troops of 82nd Airborne Division already on the ground.

HEADING OFF OMAHA

Recently landed M3A1 halftracks from the US 36th Armored Infantry Regiment, US Third Armored Division, climb away from Omaha Beach shortly after the D-Day landings. They will soon be heavily involved in the tough fighting to clear German forces from the hedgerows of Normandy.
