Tired but elated following a long daytime operation to destroy coal production facilities at Duisburg, Flight Lieutenant Colin Bell, part of a four-plane strike force from 608 (Pathfinder) Squadron, powers Mosquito 6T-B low over a snow-clad Norfolk on the final leg of their return journey, Friday 8 December 1944.

Universally acknowledged as one of the most adaptable aircraft of World War Two, the DeHavilland Mosquito was designed for speed. Powered by twin Rolls-Royce mighty Merlin engines it was as fast as a fighter, highly manoeuvrable and blessed with a range to rival many bombers. All this from an aircraft whose fuselage and wings were constructed of balsa and lightweight ply, a unique feature that led to its affectionate nickname ‘The Wooden Wonder.’ Little wonder that it thrived in roles ranging from fighter-bomber to night fighter, in coastal and shipping strikes, meteorological patrols and high-altitude photo-reconnaissance operations.

Equipped with such an outstanding aircraft, the pilots who flew with the Mosquito squadrons of No.8 Group (PFF) would soon gain a reputation for unrivalled gallantry. Men such as Flight Lieutenant Colin Bell whose aircraft takes centre stage in Anthony Saunders’ hauntingly beautiful painting titled Wooden Wonders. With the snow-clad Norfolk countryside glowing in the late watery sun, Colin Bell, part of a four-plane strike force from 608 (Pathfinder) Squadron, powers Mosquito 6T-B on the final leg of their return journey. It’s Friday 8 December 1944, the same day that he was recommended for the Distinguished Flying Cross. The recommendation stated that he had completed “a large number of operational sorties against heavily defended targets in Germany, including thirteen attacks on Berlin. Throughout his tour he has displayed courage, determination, and devotion to duty of a very high order. His example has been most inspiring, and his skill and keenness have contributed materially to the success achieved by his squadron.”

A unique event with Colin Bell at Aces High in Steventon …

We had the pleasure of Colin Bell joining us for a private Diamond Club event where he was able to sign a very limited quantity of Anthony’s stunning print.
