RAF BOMBER COMMAND SIGNING EVENT – 8th JANUARY

We are delighted to start 2017 with this exciting event at the UK Gallery paying tribute to the brave young men who served with RAF Bomber Command during WWII.

Our special guests include:

Warrant Officer CHARLIE DARBY - served with both 462 and 466 Sqns from RAF Driffield in Yorkshire as a Rear Gunner on Halifaxes. He completed 30 Ops’ over Holland and Germany and also on bombing missions on the Falaise Gap and the Ardennes in support of the Allied advance through France and Belgium.

Warrant Officer ERIC HORSHAM - having completed training as a Flight Engineer in 1943 he joined 102 Sqn based at RAF Pocklington. He served on Halifaxes on missions over Normandy in the run up to D-Day and over the Ruhr Valley.

Warrant Officer REX STATHAM - served as a Flight Engineer on Halifaxes with 158 Sqn based at RAF Lissett before transferring to 10 Sqn, again on Halifaxes. He completed a full tour of 30 Ops’ before the end of the war.

Warrant Officer ROY BRIGGS - posted to 576 Sqn at RAF Fiskerton he served as a Wireless Operator on Lancasters. Flying 10 Ops’ his missions included raids on Plauen and Bremen before taking part in Operation Manna. As the war ended he transferred to 156 Pathfinder Sqn.

Flight Lieutenant TOM PAYNE - enlisting in the RAFVR at just 15 in 1941, he flew his first solo flight before 17 and graduated as a Sergeant Pilot in October 1943. He flew both Wellingtons and Lancasters, being posted to 90 Sqn before his entire crew moved to 15 Sqn. Within 7 days he was promoted and he stayed with the squadron until demob in late 1946.
