COASTAL COMMAND & SHORT SUNDERLAND AIRCREW SIGNING EVENT – 31st JANUARY
We are delighted to announce that we’ll be joined at the UK Gallery in Wendover by aircrew that flew with RAF Coastal Command and also the legendary Short Sunderland, one of the RAF’s most reliable and versatile aircraft.
W.O. ROBERT DENWOOD – as a WOp/AG he served with 547 Sqn and later 224 Sqn Coastal Command flying B-24 Liberators and Sunderlands. He spent 1944 and 1945 flying on U-Boat hunting Operations.
W.O. LEONARD SPRATT – as a WOp/AG he first served in Egypt on Wellingtons before transferring to fly Sunderlands from Scotland with 201 Sqn. He later moved to South Wales until leaving the RAF.
LAC1 LAURIE READING – served as Bomber Command ground crew responsible for loading and developing photographic magazines in Wellingtons and Lancasters. He later served in the Far East and Indian Ocean on board numerous aircraft including Walrus and Sunderlands carrying out photo reconnaissance.
W.O. RON POWERS – an Air Gunner on Sunderlands with 201 Sqn he served in all of the different Gunner positions. His crew had the distinction of flying the last European RAF operation of WWII - a single Sunderland flying escort duty for a convoy on the 3rd June 1945, finishing at 23.59hrs.
W.O. WALLY STEVENSON DFM – flew on Wellingtons as a WOP/AG with 621 Sqn Coastal Command in the Indian Ocean. On one occasion he helped immobilised a U-boat whose crew were captured by the Royal Navy. Returning to England he served as the PTI for 617 Sqn at Woodhall Spa.
