CAUGHT ON THE SURFACE

by Robert Taylor

The Battle of the Atlantic was fought by the Royal Navy and RAF Coastal Command against the U-boats. It was a long, deadly struggle in which Hitler’s prized U-boat fleet attempted to starve Britain of food, fuel and the materials of war by destroying the convoys that kept it supplied.

In Robert's dramatic and powerful piece, the hunter becomes the hunted in a remarkable true encounter. On 30 July 1943 Short Sunderland flying boat ‘U’ of 461 Sqn RAAF attacked and sank one of three German submarines caught on the surface in the Bay of Biscay. In an instinctive act of compassion the Sunderland pilot circled the scene to drop a dinghy to the U-boat survivors.

Adding great historical authenticity, this rare piece has been personally signed by four of the crew of Sutherland 'U' of 461 Sqn and four crew of U-461:

  • Able Seaman GERHARD KORBJUHN
  • Medical Orderly WILHELM HOFFKEN
  • Able Seaman HELMUT ROSCHINSKI
  • Leading Seaman ALOIS MOMPER
  • Warrant Officer HORRIE MORGAN
  • Flight Lieutenant PETER JENSEN
  • Flight Lieutenant JOHN ROLLAND
  • Flight Lieutenant DUDLEY MARROWS

CHANCE ENCOUNTER

by Robert Taylor

A Dornier 24 flying boat of the Royal Netherlands Navy sights the Japanese invasion fleet off Kuching, British Borneo, 23 December, 1941. By chance it also sighted patrolling Dutch submarine K-X1V on the surface, unaware of the enemy position. Receiving the pilot’s signal “enemy to the north east”, the submarine quickly engaged, sinking two ships and damaging two in one of the first Allied successes against the Japanese in World War II.

Now at LOW INVENTORY, this Limited Edition print has been exclusively signed by FIVE Dutch veterans, all involved in the dramatic scene depicted, including two of the Dornier crew and three members of the submarine K-XIV crew:

  • Oud Adjudant Onderofficier Vlieger PAUL KOMMER
  • Luitenant ter Zee VK 20C b.d. GERARDUS 'GERARD' VAN SCHOOTEN
  • Kapitein-Luitenant ter Zee KMR b.d. JULIUS 'RED' VAN NIEUWENHUIZEN
