BOMBER COMMAND & POW SIGNING EVENT - 17th JULY

We will be joined at the UK Gallery by some amazing WWII veterans who flew with RAF Bomber Command during WWII and spent time as Prisoners of War.

Our special guests include:

Flight Lieutenant JACK LYON - a Pilot with Bomber Command, he was shot down in June 1941 on the German/Dutch border and taken PoW.  He was moved to Stalag Luft III in April 1942 and played the crucial role as a Stooge during The Great Escape. He was waiting as number 88 in the queue on the night of the escape.

Air Commodore CHARLES CLARKE OBE - a Bomb Aimer with 619 Sqn flying Lancasters, he was on his 18th Operation on 24th February 1944 to Schweinfurt when his aircraft was attacked by a German night fighter and shot down.  After his capture he was sent to Stalag Luft III.

Warrant Officer JAMES COPUS - Jim was posted to 97 Sqn Pathfinder Force in late 1943 as a Mid-Upper Gunner. On a mission to Frankfurt on 22nd March 1944 his aircraft was attacked by German night fighters and after bailing out he was captured and sent to Stalag Luft I.

Warrant Officer RON TOMLIN - flying as a Bomb Aimer with 10 Sqn, his Halifax was attacked whilst on the way back from Nuremburg on the night of 10th August 1943. After ditching in the North Sea the crew were rescued and captured by the Germans, spending the rest of the war as a PoW.

Corporal Fitter 2A FRANK COLENSO BU - initially served as an Air Frame Mechanic working on Wellingtons with 83 OTU before being posted to Bombay and readying WACO Gliders for the Burma Campaign. He later also worked with 144 Sqn Repair & Salvage Unit on Vengeance Dive Bombers for use in Burma.
