Paul Dove creates this atmospheric painting of an RAF Westland Lysander flying over the moonlit water after a late night covert operation. In this original we can see Lysander V9367 flying into occupied France off the coast to pick up a secret agent who operated with the French Resistance during World War Two.

The Lysander was a small prop aircraft used immediately before and during World War Two, it was designed to be a reconnaissance aircraft to photograph and observe artillery fire in the daylight. One of the Lysander's main characteristics was its STOL (Short Take Off and Landing) which came into its own as it was able to land and take off from short and unprepared airstrips to help avoid enemy detection.
 

The Lysander became very useful to the RAF when they decided to put it forward to be used in the Special Duties Squadrons - their role was to keep the utmost secrecy, flying under the cover of darkness and flying into enemy territory undetected to either re-supply France or drop off spies and even on some occasions they were expected to extract downed Allied airmen before the enemy could capture them.
