On the night of 16th/17th May 1943 Lancasters of 617 Squadron took off from RAF Scampton. Their mission was to attack dams deep within the German heartland in one of the most audacious raids in the history of air warfare. Depicted is Lancaster A-Apple, flown by S/L Melvin ‘Dinghy’ Young, braving the flak and heavy machine gunfire, as it attacks the Mohne Dam, its Upkeep mine has just been released. The target would soon be breached.

 

This piece has been matted to include the signatures of SIX 617 Squadron members, alongside the photo and autograph of the scientist who created the devastating bouncing bomb that wreaked havoc on the Möhne Dam:
