SPECIAL DUTIES: Westland Lysander Experience - Sunday 6th September
Experience one of Britain's rarest flying warbirds as the legendary Westland Lysander lands at Aces High Gallery and discover the remarkable story behind the aircraft that became the lifeline of the Special Operations Executive. PLUS, new limited edition artwork from the studio of Paul Dove!
Join us at Aces High Gallery for a special day celebrating one of the most fascinating aircraft of the Second World War - the Westland Lysander!
Flying in for the event is the beautifully restored Westland Lysander G-CCOM, one of only two genuine airworthy Lysanders flying in the UK today. Originally designed for Army Co-operation duties, the Lysander would later become synonymous with the daring clandestine operations of the Special Operations Executive (SOE), landing under the cover of darkness in occupied Europe to insert and recover agents from improvised fields. Its remarkable short take-off and landing performance made these secret missions possible and cemented its place as one of the most iconic aircraft of the war.
Visitors will have the opportunity to watch the aircraft arrive during the morning, get up close throughout the day, capture photographs alongside this extraordinary warbird, and witness its departure and fly-past later in the afternoon.
The event will also mark the launch of a brand new Limited Edition artwork by acclaimed aviation artist Paul Dove. Inspired by the Lysander's remarkable wartime story, this highly exclusive edition will be limited to just 25 hand-embellished prints, each individually enhanced by the artist. Visitors will also have the opportunity to view the original painting on display at the gallery.
We're also planning additional talks and activities centred around the history of the SOE, with further announcements to follow.
Whether you're fascinated by wartime aviation, secret operations, military history or exceptional aviation art, this promises to be a memorable day celebrating one of Britain's most distinctive wartime aircraft.
