Soldiers of Oxfordshire Museum Exhibition, Woodstock – Saturday 11th March onwards

We’re delighted to be launching an exhibition at this modern, engaging and interactive museum located just a stone’s throw from Blenheim Palace. You are cordially invited to the opening event on Saturday 11th March from 11am – 4pm.

11 March 2023

This launch event is an ideal opportunity to browse the museum featuring objects and stories from people affected by conflict – from soldiers serving on the front lines to ordinary people living on the Home Front.

We’ll have on display a huge array of artwork including recently framed pieces and previously unseen original work. PLUS, if that wasn’t already special enough, we’ll be joined by Second World War veterans so it’s a great chance to mingle and have a chat whilst enjoying some complimentary refreshments. This is not a formal signing event, but there will be an opportunity for the veterans to personalise any pieces at no extra charge.

Our esteemed guests include:

Warrant Officer ROY BRIGGS - as a Wireless Operator on Lancasters with 576 Squadron based at RAF Fiskerton, Roy completed 10 wartime missions including raids to Plauen and Bremen before taking part in Operation Manna. As the war in Europe ended he transferred to 156 Pathfinder Squadron.

Private MERVYN KERSH Ld’H - due to land on Gold Beach D-Day +5, Mervyn was serving with the RAOC with the 17th Advanced Vehicle company and were called to action earlier, landing on Gold Beach on D-Day +3. Charged with vehicle logistics and their transit storage post-invasion, Mervyn served through Holland and Belgium crossing the Rhine into Germany by the end of the War. Hearing that Bergen-Belsen concentration camp had been liberated in April 1945, Mervyn took the emotional trip to visit the site and meet survivors.

Flight Lieutenant WALTER FORSTER - based in Germany after the war in 1946 he flew Spitfires and then Mosquitos with 98 Squadron. Moving back to the UK he flew Meteors with 65 Squadron from Duxford before moving again to Germany with 234 Squadron flying Hunters. Posted to RAF Leuchars in Scotland with 43 Squadron he again flew Hunters before moving back to Germany on an exchange with the new German Airforce instructing young pilots on the Fouga Magiser jet trainer.
