At sunrise on 12 November 1944, led by Wing Commander James Tait, Lancasters of 617 Squadron RAF prepare to make their bombing run on the German battleship Tirpitz.  As they assemble for the target run, Tait steers 270 degrees towards their target moored some 100 miles to the west in the Norwegian fjord at Tromsø. The fate of the Tirpitz is sealed.

Published in 2004, this striking Limited Edition print was signed at the time by FOUR pilots who all took part in raids against the Tirpitz. Making this copy even more special, our expert team have included in the matting a further SIX original autographs of 617 pilots and aircrew who similarly attacked the mighty German battleship, including one of the RAF’s most inspirational leaders, James Tait, who not only lead these raids against the Tirpitz but was also awarded no less than four DSOs to become one of the most highly-decorated RAF airmen of WWII.

The complete list of signatures reads;

  • Flying Officer C B R Fish
  • Squadron Leader Tony Iveson DFC AE
  • Flight Lieutenant Bob Knights DSO DFC
  • Squadron Leader E.A. Wass AE
