OL’ GAPPY – RIDING THE FLAK - Original Pencil Drawing
The air is alive with deadly explosions as ‘Ol Gappy’ and B-17s of the 524th Bomb Squadron, 379th Bomb Group run into the intense flak over Merseburg, 11 September 1944. This resilient Flying Fortress survived until the end of the war and completed 157 combat operations, believed to be more than any other bomber in the 8th Air Force.
This outstanding pencil work is Richard at his finest and serves as a lasting tribute to those who flew B-17s with the 8th Air Force during WWII. It has been personally endorsed by two USAAF veterans who served on this mighty aircraft in combat over Europe:
