MOSQUITO AIRCREW SIGNING EVENT - 25th SEPTEMBER

It is with great pleasure that we announce an amazing signing event at our UK Gallery where we will be joined by a number of aircrew who flew the de Havilland Mosquito during WWII.

25 September 2016

The versatile ‘Wooden Wonder’ was used by the RAF for many different roles throughout WWII including low, medium and high altitude tactical bombing, as well as on night fighter and pathfinder duties.

Our special guess include:

Flying Officer JACK YOUENS - having completed his Pilot training he joined 21 Sqn on Mosquitos based at Gravesend and later Thorney Island. Part of 140 Wing, 2nd Tactical Air Force, he took part in daylight precision raids and night time attacks on German targets. His squadron is also famous for their part in Operation Jericho, a low-level raid on Amiens Prison to free French Resistance and political prisoners.

Flying Officer CHARLES PARKER DFM - joining the RAF in 1943 he qualified as a Navigator and was posted to fly Mosquitos with 128 Sqn in late 1944. He then moved to 163 Sqn flying over 50 missions to Germany, including 20 to Berlin, as part of the Light Night Strike Force.

Flight Lieutenant ROGER CALVERT - as a Navigator he flew with 141 Sqn who played an important role in the success of intruder sorties made by RAF Bomber Command over Germany as they supported the heavy bombers by attacking enemy Night Fighters. As a result, he had one confirmed and two ‘probable’ victories during his 32 Operations.

Flight Lieutenant DES CURTIS DFC - after training as a WOp/AG he was posted to 235 Sqn flying Beaufighters over the North Sea and the Norwegian coast. In April 1943 he converted to Mosquitos as a Navigator and helped form 618 Sqn for special operations against the Tirpitz. He then flew from bases in Cornwall attacking U-Boats in their pens along the French Atlantic Coast. In September 1944 he joined 248 Sqn and served with the Banff Strike Wing flying Mosquitos out of Scotland.

Flight Lieutenant GEORGE PRICHARD - joined the RAF in 1943 on a direct entry commission and was posted to 151 Nightfighter Sqn on Mosquitos, seeing action through to the D-Day campaign. He then moved to ‘Tiger Force’ (Long range Bomber Force) and post war as a Radar Officer in 4 Group.
